Hard work pays off for Sports Association
After three years of hard work, it has finally paid off for the Sports Association with the building of new sports facilities in East Bierley now underway.
Local sports clubs – Birkenshaw Bluedogs RLFC, Hunsworth FC and East Bierley FC – joined forces to form East Bierley Community Sports Association in a bid to secure funding and investment for some much needed new changing facilities at the villages Playing Fields off Hunsworth Lane.
After successfully going through a rigorous and lengthy application process they were successful in securing funding from Sport England and the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, which added to a £175,000 loan from Kirklees Council made the project a reality.
EBCSA Secretary Simon Armitage spoke of his delight to get the project underway and the determination of the local community;
“Securing funding and agreeing investment with Kirklees Council has been a real labour of love for everybody involved over the past three years,
“The sports facilities at East Bierley are used by hundreds of people every year but the changing rooms were in a state where they are simply not fit for use anymore. All three clubs were getting to the stage where we were going to have no other option but to either move site or dissolve the clubs due to lack of facilities.
“I speak on behalf of everybody involved at EBCSA when I say that we’re absolutely ecstatic that the funding, investment, and loan has all been secured and building work has begun on new modern facilities that will future proof all types of sport in the local area for at least the next 125 years.
“The coming together of these three teams goes to show how strong our community is in and around Birkenshaw, East Bierley and Hunsworth – we’ve shown that we’re stronger together and hopefully that mentality will inspire both the juniors at our respective clubs and other sports teams across the region.”
The appointment of local Construction firm Britannia Ltd has meant that works can commence imminently. Managing Director, and local resident Alistair Smith is said to be delighted to have secured the contract which will be an exciting development for the community.
